How the Hot Water Recirculation Flow Calculator Works
A domestic hot-water recirculation loop must return enough heat to offset distribution-pipe heat loss while limiting the temperature drop between the heat source and remote fixtures. Once total supply-pipe heat loss is known, the required water flow follows from the standard hydronic heat-transfer relationship.
Enter the total design heat loss of the hot-water distribution piping and the maximum acceptable temperature drop. The calculator converts that heat duty into the thermodynamic minimum recirculation flow.
A multi-branch system still requires hydraulic balancing so each branch receives enough flow. The total flow calculated here does not guarantee the temperature at every remote branch without branch-by-branch analysis.
