How the Plumbing Pipe Velocity Calculator Works

Pipe velocity follows the continuity equation Q = A × V. When flow is entered in US gallons per minute and actual inside diameter in inches, the unit conversions combine to the familiar 0.4085 × GPM ÷ D² shortcut.

Use actual inside diameter, not nominal pipe size. Copper tube type, steel schedule, PEX and other materials can have different internal diameters even when they share the same nominal size.

Velocity is only one sizing criterion. Final pipe selection also requires pressure-drop, available pressure, water-hammer/noise, erosion, code and equipment-connection checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I enter nominal pipe size or inside diameter?

Enter actual inside diameter. Nominal size is a designation and can differ significantly from the real flow area.

Does the formula work for liquids other than water?

The geometric velocity calculation does, because velocity depends on volumetric flow and area. Fluid properties matter for pressure loss and other checks.

Does this calculate pressure drop?

No. Pressure drop requires pipe roughness, length, fittings and fluid properties in addition to flow and diameter.

Can I use the result for hot-water recirculation?

Yes as a velocity check after the recirculation flow has been calculated.
