How the Diffuser & Grille Sizing Calculator Works
The first sizing step is geometric: divide the design airflow by the target velocity through the device's free area. This gives the minimum free area required to pass the air at the selected velocity.
Because a grille face contains blades, borders and other obstructions, nominal face area is larger than free area. Enter the manufacturer's free-area ratio to estimate the required face area, then use the selected aspect ratio to estimate width and height.
Final diffuser or grille selection must use manufacturer throw, pressure-drop, sound and NC data. This calculator is intended to narrow the size range before product selection, not replace catalogue performance data.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is free area?
Free area is the unobstructed open area through which air can pass, excluding blades, frames and other blockage.
Why is nominal face area larger than free area?
The grille or diffuser face is partly blocked by construction elements, so only a fraction of its nominal area is open to airflow.
Can I size a diffuser using only CFM?
Not completely. CFM determines area, but final diffuser selection also depends on throw, pressure drop, sound and room geometry.
What free-area ratio should I use?
Use the manufacturer's published value for the exact product whenever possible. The calculator keeps it editable because products differ.
